Sedation Dentistry Q & A

What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is a proven and safe way to relax during your dental visit. The method involves the use of medication during dental exams to help you feel relaxed in the dental chair. It is used for patients who:

  • Experience anxiety during dental appointments
  • Have not been to the dentist in an extended period of time
  • Have sensitive teeth or gums
  • Are sensitive to the sights, sounds, and smells within a dental office
  • Have post-traumatic dental experience

Sedation dentistry enables individuals who avoid the dentist because of fear to receive the quality dental care that they deserve.

What are the types of sedation dentistry?

There are several sedation dentistry options. The American Dental Association (ADA) outlines guidelines for each method and the training required to perform them. The ADA allows most dentists to administer nitrous oxide, but special certifications are required for deeper sedation methods.

Nitrous oxide

Nitrous oxide is commonly referred to as “laughing gas” and is the most common form of sedation dentistry. Unlike other methods, nitrous oxide doesn’t put you to sleep. It does, however, reduce your anxiety during a dental exam or procedure.

Nitrous oxide is administered with a machine to eliminate the anxiety that individuals experience with injections. It is often used in combination with local injections of anesthesia, enabling the injections to be virtually painless. The procedure is proven, effective, and consistent.

Other sedation dentistry methods include:

  • Enteral sedation, which is the absorption of medication
  • IV sedation
  • General anesthesia

These deeper sedation methods are generally utilized during oral surgery procedures such as wisdom tooth removal or jaw surgery.

Is sedation dentistry for me?

Your overall health is an important factor when considering if you are eligible for certain types of sedation dentistry. If you experience the following conditions, it is important to receive special clearance from your physician prior to being sedated in the dental office:

  • Hypertension
  • Respiratory disease
  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease

The team at Smile Country Dental always assesses your medical history and current health before sedating you. Your safety is of utmost importance.
