Orthodontics Q & A

What is orthodontics?

Orthodontics is the dental specialty that prevents, diagnoses, and corrects misalignments of the teeth and jaw. Misalignments have the potential to affect both your dental health and overall health unless corrected.

What braces options are available?

The team at Smile Country Dental offers several braces options for your individual needs.

Traditional braces

Recent developments in the design of braces have created smaller, stronger, and more efficient brackets. The conventional metal brackets are still available, but Smile Country Dental also offers clear and tooth-colored ceramic and plastic brackets.

Due to these developments, traditional braces are increasingly being used to help adults improve their smiles. In fact, the results associated with adult braces are greater than the results seen in children and teenagers.

Six Month Smiles® are clear braces developed to correct adult teeth misalignment in as little as six months. It’s an effective, affordable, and safe way to increase self-esteem and become confident in your smile.

Braces are also used to correct overlapping teeth, gaps in your teeth, and symptoms of TMJ.

Invisalign

Invisalign® has the ability to correct many orthodontic concerns without the need for traditional braces. The technology is composed of clear and custom-fit removable aligners that are changed every two weeks. The aligners slowly move your teeth into a straight position and it is recommended that you wear them for 20-22 hours per day.

The cost of Invisalign is similar to traditional braces. Benefits include the ability to eat your favorite foods, no special toothbrushes, and no visible braces.

What appliance options are available?

There are several orthodontic appliances used to treat patients by the team at Smile Country Dental.

Multi-spring appliance

A multi-spring appliance is a removable device that closes the space between the front of your teeth. It creates room in your arch for blocked teeth and guides them into place.

Retainer

A retainer is used after your braces are removed. It ensures your teeth maintain the correct position.

Space maintainer

A space maintainer can either be removable or fixed. Typically, they are used when pediatric patients lose a baby tooth prematurely and the gap left from the tooth needs to be held open.

Further appliances available include:

  • Twin block
  • Swing lock expander
  • Spring digitizer
  • Palatal expander
  • Lingual arch
